Their eyes fold when they glare at me Diverted intentions to scare me but some don't blink Bark by burning their eyes into my skin Leave hate mail in their gestures Hoping somehow their cruelty will cure me Purify me more than Salah
Repenting for my sins five times a day means nothing Replenishing my spirit through talking to Allah falls short Salahakba until knees red with remembrance Body stiffened unto prayer position Heart filled with a holy ghost they wouldn’t feel As if my God isn't as good as theirs
They burned the Hadith on my front lawn Called it only the first threat before the war on terror The second time, they burned the only mosque in this city My Quran trembles on the shelf, stuffed with Charred remaining pages of sayings from Muhammad
I'm human, I pray five times a day like most of you try to but can't Feel the paper cuts on my fingertips from flipping these pages Practice what you preach...
I struggle, to make ends meet with no money Stressing so my children have a future brighter than mine Trying to find a purpose in a life that often seems worthless
But I pray to God, Leave all of my fears and worries on a tab and Give the glory to Him Because regardless of how distant we seem I shed tears and bleed red as you Have a mind filled with curiosity and two eyes to see Two legs and arms to climb the highest tree
You think what makes one American is Knowing all of the words to the national anthem Reciting the pledge of allegiance daily Remembering our presidents like the back of my hand
But these things don’t make me American My love for this country, and hopes that we will one day Live in a world of peace, with a quality education for all Without hunger and slumber - no third world countries Equality for men and women,
But I firmly believe in fighting for what you believe in And that if you work hard you can achieve anything That the American Dream is more than a fable
